Agriculture, industry and mining are the main sources from which money is drawn into the economy of Assam. About 70 percent of the total work force is engaged in farming. A majority of the state's population, almost 90%, live in rural areas where the mainstay of income is from agricultural production. A considerable numbers of Assam's population depend on secondary and tertiary sectors related to the tea industry.

The present day Assam state is very small as compared to the one that was 40 years ago. Still it is the largest economy in north-east.

The state has some large industries related to tea and petroleum sectors.

The per capita income of Assam was estimated Rs.12,593 in 2003-04.

Industrial Policy
The Industrial Policy of Assam – 2003 has been formulated by the government to make Assam one of the preferred destinations for investment and to create great employment opportunities for the people of the state.
