Rongali Bihu
In the month of April, Guwahati becomes a dancers’ paradise. The Assamese New Year is celebrated here with great enthusiasm. The festival locally known as Rongali Bihu is also celebrated in almost all parts of the state with exuberant singing, drumming and dancing. Women perform a gracefully sinuous dance, while the men accompany them on horns and drums.

Other festivals
Assamese celebrate all important Indian fairs and festivals with equal fervour. These festivals include Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja, Swaraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kalipuja and Shivaratri. Those of Islamic faith celebrate Id and Muharram. Similarly, Christians celebrate Christmas.
